Claude Monet (1840-1926): Boulevard des Capucines (c.1873-74)

Boulevard des Capucines captures a scene of the hustle and bustle of Parisian life… Applying very little detail, Monet uses short, quick brushstrokes to create the “impression” of people in the city alive with movement… (Monet painted two views from this location…)

Paul Cézanne (1839-1906): Mont Sainte-Victoire (c.1905-06)

This is one of the last landscapes of Mont Sainte-Victoire, favored by Cézanne at the end of his life… The view is rendered in what is essentially an abstract vocabulary. Rocks and trees are suggested by mere daubs of paint as opposed to being extensively depicted. The overall composition itself, however, is clearly representational and also follows in the ethos of Japanese prints. The looming mountain is reminiscent of a puzzle of various hues, assembled into a recognizable object. This and other such late works of Cézanne proved to be of a paramount importance to the emerging modernists, who sought to liberate themselves from the rigid tradition of pictorial depiction…

Hőségben utazni, erre csak ásítoztam… de amikor szóba került a Sziget, mint egészen közeli úti cél rögtön az élet napsütötte tájképe lebegett szemeim előtt… időkészletekkel rendelkezünk, gyerünk a Szigetre. Azokkal az emberekkel, akikkel mindig öröm együtt lenni ez csak jó buli lehet. Útközben valamilyen csillapíthatatlan igényérzet volt bennem a régi bulik érzete. Minden jól alakult és mindnyájan jól szórakoztunk a jó programoknak és a jó szervezésnek köszönhetően…

Úgy érzem a Sziget elvesztette ugyan az emberszabású méreteket, de a magas eszményeket kergetés és az emberek közötti pimasz-fölényeskedő magatartás hiánya miatt a tömegméretek ellenére is csak ajánlani tudom…

Nem szeretek utazni, de a tenger az más… A tengertől hazatérve még napokig a hullámok, a sós víz, a parti homok és a sziklák járnak a fejemben. A legerősebb emlékek a hajnali és a késődélutáni fürdőzések a tengerben. A színes-titokzatos tükröződések és árnyékok fényjátékai fürdés közben, ezt csak a tenger tudja… a tengeri táj e kellékeit hiába keresnénk máshol… A móló, a ringatózó jachtok az éttermek-étlapok minden a tengerről szól, ez nagy öröm és nagy küzdelem. A tengerparti emberek életkedvvel telítve kedvesek, kicsit nagyképűek, de nyugodtak, mert tudják - ha egyszer úgy alakul - a legvégén úgyis a tenger győz…

Estefelé locsolok a kertben. A nap még dühödten villog, nem enged a harmincöt fokos hőségből. Elzárom a vízcsapot. Inkább lemegyek a kert végében csordogáló (esős időben gőgösen hömpölygő) patakhoz könnyedén átugrom. A túlparti mező mintha fittyet hányna az augusztusi hőségre. Az éles sárga fényben nézem a mező virágait, locsolás nélkül is fegyelmezetten virágoznak, sűrűn összeölelkezve, alázatosan és láthatóan boldogan… Majd lassan visszasétálok a kertbe a „civilizált” virágok közé… locsolás közben csodálkozva, megkönnyebbülve kissé irigykedve gondolok a vadvirágokra, igen, a természet rendben van, stabil…

A Nap még a felébredéssel próbálkozik, de a fák közötti mocorgás-madárcsiripelés visszavonhatatlanul jelzi a reggelt. Ilyenkor nap mint nap elcsodálkozom, hogy milyen szép a nyári reggel: a harmat csillogása a virágokon, a fűszálakon, a bokrok és a fák levelein… Majd az ébredező napsugarak fák között megvillanó fényei kicsábítanak a teraszra - a levegő friss. Igen, mindenben egység és összhang ilyen a nyári reggel…

Georgia O'Keeffe (1887-1986): Petunia No. 2 (1924)

Petunia No. 2, one of O'Keeffe's first large-scale renderings of a flower, represents the beginning of her exploration of a theme that would mark her career. In this painting, she magnifies the flower's form to emphasize its shape and color... She stated that "nobody really sees a flower - really - it is so small - we haven't time - and to see takes time... So I said to myself - I'll paint what I see - what the flower is to me but I'll paint it big and they will be surprised into taking time to look at it."

Camille Pissarro (1830-1903): Road to Versailles at Louveciennes (1869)

In this early Impressionist effort, Pissarro captures a fleeting sensation of the winter season, constructing his composition through the use of quick dashes of color. The long shadows cast on the new-fallen snow by passersby explore the atmospheric effects of cold winter light… The freshness and thickness of the brushstrokes, most easily identified in the trees' branches and the colorful garments of the townspeople, are the sort of constructive building blocks Pissarro would eventually pass down to Cézanne. The more smoothly distributed paint of the sky and the snow-covered ground demonstrate Pissarro's transformation of Realist naturalism into what would become the experimental, rough Impressionist aesthetic…

Gustave Courbet (1819-1877): The Origin of the World (L'Origine du monde, 1866)

Courbet regularly painted female nudes, sometimes in a frankly libertine vein… But in The Origin of the World he went to lengths of daring and frankness which gave his painting its peculiar fascination… Such unsanctified nudes provoked much discussion about flaws in Courbet's character and art, but the artist reveled in the added attention and increased reputation as a confrontational artist… The Origin of the World, now openly displayed, has taken its proper place in the history of modern painting…
